A weekend in Richmond, Virginia that had it all — the wedding of my oldest niece with the whole family gathered together, and a beautiful afternoon exploring Maymont Park, one of the city’s most stunning hidden gems.
Some trips sneak up on you. What starts as a quick weekend away turns into something you end up talking about for months — not because anything went according to some grand plan, but because everything just came together the right way. Our 2025 trip to Richmond, Virginia was exactly that kind of visit.
The anchor of the whole weekend was a very special occasion: the wedding of my oldest niece. With family traveling in from all directions, Richmond gave us a place to gather, celebrate, and reconnect. The ceremony was beautiful — heartfelt vows, happy tears, and the kind of warmth that only comes when the whole family is in the same room cheering someone they love. The reception carried that same energy well into the evening, with good food, great music, and no shortage of dancing. It was a reminder of what these moments are really about — not just the couple at the center of it all, but everyone who shows up to celebrate with them.
Exploring Richmond Between Celebrations
With a full day to explore before the festivities began, we made our way to Maymont — one of Richmond’s true hidden gems and, honestly, one of the most beautiful urban parks I’ve ever visited. Spread across 100 acres along the James River, Maymont was originally the private estate of Major James Dooley and his wife Sallie, who gifted it to the city of Richmond upon their deaths in the early 1900s. More than a century later, it remains one of the city’s most beloved landmarks.
The grounds are a wonderful mix of formal gardens, rolling meadows, and wooded nature trails. We started on the upper terraces, where carved stone balustrades overlook sweeping views of the gardens below. Giant decorative urns mark the corners of the terraces, and the whole area has a stately, old-world elegance that feels out of place in the best possible way — like stumbling onto the grounds of an Italian villa in the middle of Virginia.
The Japanese Garden
The absolute highlight of our Maymont visit was the Japanese Garden — a meticulously maintained landscape tucked into the hillside that stops you in your tracks the moment you step inside. A tranquil koi pond sits at the center, its glassy surface reflecting the surrounding Japanese maples, ornamental grasses, and cloud-pruned shrubs. A natural stone waterfall spills down a rocky embankment at one end, filling the air with a soft, steady rush of sound that makes it feel like the rest of the world has been muted.
We spent a good stretch of time just wandering the paths here, stopping to watch the koi drift beneath the surface and taking in the careful artistry of a garden that feels both ancient and perfectly alive. The colors were extraordinary — deep burgundy maples, vivid greens, the bright spark of summer flowers — all of it framed against a brilliant blue sky. Coffee in hand, it was just about perfect.
Richmond Has a Way of Surprising You
Beyond Maymont, Richmond itself left a strong impression. It’s a city with real character — a blend of deep history, a thriving arts scene, and a food culture that punches well above its weight. Strolling through neighborhoods between stops, it was easy to see why locals are so proud of it. The James River runs right through the heart of the city, and everywhere you look there’s something interesting going on.
But really, the city was a backdrop to something much bigger. A wedding has a way of making everything feel more vivid — the food tastes better, the conversations run longer, and the people around you seem a little more precious than usual. Watching my niece start this new chapter surrounded by everyone who loves her was worth every mile of the drive up.
Richmond, we’ll be back.
